I decided to get my taxes done this year because I wasn't sure how to handle the whole "home buying" aspect. Usually, I just use TUrboTax and have a nice check in my account by February at the latest. This year, I went to my parent's recommended guy. I finally get an appointment in early March. Jim and I go and his taxes are completed and he now has one of his 2 refunds in hand.
I am told that I need to go to the city of Clawson and get some tax info from them. I do this the next day and fax it over to the tax guy. I call and leave a voice mail asking how much I owe him and when I can stop by to drop off the check. No return call. I call later and his wife tells me that the fax was received and they'll let me know if they need anything else from me. Okay, good. I should be done soon. I don't hear anything, so I call and leave a voice mail a couple of days later. No one returns my call. I am pretty sure I called again and no one called back.
Over a week later, I get an email saying that in order for my taxes to be filed in a timely manner, I need to go pick up my return and bring a check with me to pay him. Fine. I've been trying to do this for over a week now. So I call and leave another voice mail and ask when I can stop by. No answer.
4 days later, I give up on getting a return phone call and email back and ask the following questions: 1) Who do I make the check out to? and 2) Should I stop by (if so, when) or should I mail it?
The next day, he emails me back and says it would be better to bring it by his house than to mail it. Then he has the nerve to tell me to call and set up a time that I can stop by! Like I haven't already called multiple times! Ridiculous. Today I am going to call again and try to set something up. This is crazy. I really just want my money. If he doesn't call back, I'm stopping by his house unannounced.
I think I'll be finding a new tax preparer next year.
Posted by dee at March 23, 2005 09:44 AMGeez Dee! Chill. At least you live within 5 miles of the guy.
You need to find your bookmark for turbotax.com.
Let me tell ya from experience - it handles home buying just fine :)
Posted by: todd at March 23, 2005 10:05 AMSorry, Ray, but I'm with Dee on this one. If someone considers themself a "professional," then they better act like it or get the hell out of the business they are in.
In Dee's case, not even returning a phone call let alone getting the job done is utter crap.
Next year, just check out H&R Block. Either at any Sears location, or one of their many locations in plazas and such.
I had a bad experience last year as well with a "professional" and just went back to the usual guy that does everyone's taxes in our family this time around.
And if you do live within 5 miles of this guy, I would suggest you purchase a couple dozen of eggs to help decorate the outside of his "establishment."
Posted by: Jeff at March 23, 2005 10:10 AMHey Jeff if you use H&R Block you might be a bigger fool than them.
Dee....the aggravation you are experiencing is one of the reasons I became an accountant. This way, I have no one else to blame but me.
However, I am with Todd on this one. I think you should have taken a crack at it using TurboTax. I've used it myself the last five years. It's very comprehensive and will easily walk you through just about anything.
e.g. I exercised a bunch of stock options for the first time this year (the little haywoods just had to have new Nintendo DS's for Christmas) and I was amazed at how easy TurboTax accounted for these transactions on my return.
haywood + turbotax = both tax refund checks received by the end of February.
Posted by: haywood at March 23, 2005 10:42 AMDO NOT ever use H&R Block!!! I know a few people that work at Block. My eight year old daughter knows more about taxes.
Posted by: haywood at March 23, 2005 10:45 AMOh yeah - and living nearby shouldn't be an excuse. I don't mind having to go back to his house. I just wish he'd tell me a time to go!
Posted by: Dee at March 23, 2005 10:46 AMI am getting a nice return, but it doesn't excuse the lack of attention or respect with returning my calls. It's now been over 2 weeks since my first appointment and I don't think I should have had to wait this long. I agree with Jeff - if you consider yourself a professional, you should return client phone calls. If not the first or second ones, then at least the 3rd one! I have big plans for the money!
Posted by: Dee at March 23, 2005 10:46 AMDee...he might me trying out his stealth maneuvers on you in anticipation of when the IRS auditors come a knockin.
Posted by: haywood at March 23, 2005 10:51 AMDee, True there is no excuse for him not returning your calls but believe me, you will get good results from him. Maybe he didn't like you (just kidding) Your mom and I have never had a problem with him and we would drive 30 miles and take days off to get there. I used to use turbo tax and I hated it!
Posted by: Ray at March 23, 2005 11:06 AMI know. Mom keeps saying that she can't understand why I'm having problems. She also said that you guys never got as much money back as you have since you go to him. I'm just getting frusterated.
I just called and talked to his wife. He isn't home but said I can come by around 4:45. I only need to be there for 2 minutes. Hopefully he'll be there when I get there. I'd love direct deposit instead of a check, so I guess I'll have to deal with all that account info stuff tonight with him. Arrrrgggghhhh!
Posted by: Dee at March 23, 2005 11:10 AMNo, Ray, I am no fool. I don't use H&R Block. We have an old family friend that is an accountant and handles our taxes. Last year I thought to deviate from that and use one of those pricey firms - emphasis on pricey. Now that I consider to be foolish on my behalf. So this year I went back to the usual guy and all was well and fairly priced for the service.
But based on Dee's experience with your guy, it was a cheaper alternative to try with H&R. They're not the brightest guys on the block, but they do finish things.
And I'm not sure what bad experiences you and Haywood had with them, but the few people here at work that use them didn't have any problems with their services. Location, perhaps?
Posted by: Jeff at March 23, 2005 01:59 PMI've never had a bad experience with Block because I never let them do my taxes. But you said it yourself, I don't think they're the brightest bulb in the drawer. "Tax Professional" would be a huge stretch.
Case in point...I have some friends in Connecticut that work at Block and I've seen the instruction manuals and training class materials they use. Some of these folks worked for me when I was a CFO at a newspaper there and they had trouble filling out their time cards properly each week, let alone tackle someone else's income tax return.
Posted by: haywood at March 23, 2005 02:24 PMGood discussion topic today Dee...Thanks! Plus I had to get us off #13 on the post thread...this being about income tax returns and all.
Posted by: haywood at March 23, 2005 02:31 PMI got my cash a few weeks ago. But it's all gone now. A new washer and dryer for the home soaked it up. The remainder went to the new blinds fund. Everything costs too much.
Posted by: Jeff at March 23, 2005 03:21 PMLast night went well. I showed up, signed a paper, handed over a check, set up direct deposit for the money and left. I was probably there less than 10 minutes. He said he'd file my taxes last night, so hopefully the money will show up in my account soon.
Like Jeff said, everything costs too much, so my money will be gone shortly after receiving it as well. One chunk in already marked for wedding bands, another for part of the honeymoon and another for part of the photographer.
I need to win the lotto.
Posted by: Dee at March 24, 2005 08:50 AMGood Idea! Win the lotto but make sure it's a big one okay!
Posted by: Ray at March 24, 2005 10:52 AMThat guy sounds wierd. Come over to my house and get it? At least you are getting money back. I sold my duplex last year and I walk into the tax man's office after about a week and he says, "So what did you expect"..."the worst", I say. "So you figured you'd owe?", and I say "Yes, what's the damage". "$11,000" he says - not joking. Turns out he used the wrong amount for the purchase price on my duplex - which made it look like I made 60000 on it instead of 10000. Freaking crazy. Only owed 1500 after he corrected it. TALK ABOUT A HEART ATTACK THOUGH! Never so happy to pay out 1500 in my life!
