My kiddie ice cream flavor was "Superman." A bunch of swirled together colors that tasted like crap actually. If only I had discovered Mint Chocolate Chip sooner.

I'm from Michigan and now live in California. Does anyone know where I can get blue moon icecream?

Posted by: Krissy at November 22, 2002 07:44 PM

Blue moon ice cream is still around. I believe it is made by Schoep's Ice Cream, possibly of Madison, WI. I have never seen it in a store, but I treated myself to a huge scoop of it this past summer at a sandwich shop in Janesville, WI. It looks and tastes as yummy as it did 35 years ago when I was a kid!

I was actually doing a search for blue moon ice cream when this site came up. Even tho' the comments are old I am going to do so and maybe someone will email me with a response someday. I fondly remember blue moon ice as my favorite and most special treat over 40 years ago. I got it in Pentwater, MI where we vacationed in summer. I was from Chicago then (now living in California) I don't remember what it tasted like tho' my research says it was fruity, like fruit loops cereal. I initially thought it might be blue raspberry....Haven't been able to find a recipe yet. It seems the only people that know about it and still have it are from Michigan and (mostly) Wisconsin. (Pretty much the same story for frozen custard ice cream also. Ah, fond memories so long ago.

Just like some others, I just moved to California from Michigan and can't find Blue Moon anywhere. It's my favorite and I'm on the search. Will inform you if I ever find some.

I loved blue moon ice cream as a youngster as well. I know Hershey's Ice Cream also sells blue moon. They have a website that you can search to locate a retailer. Unfortunately, I could not find any stores west of the Mississippi.

Hi all!

This thread is pretty old... but somehow still a bit active - check out our main page to have somewhere more recent to post to!

Hey I grew up on Blue Moon Ice Cream and never knew how to describe the flavor other than 'blue' or 'good'. I also came across the description of Froot Loops but that is not accurate and blue raspberry is even further from the truth. I think blue curacao might be used as a flavoring but am not sure. An ice cream chain here in Milwaukee named The Chocolate Factory serves the BEST blue moon I have ever had and I have tried blue moon in any parlor that served it. Their ice cream is made by a company called Blommer's. I also am in desperate need of a recipe for it because I go off to college in 6 weeks and cannot leave without it. I will keep looking for a recipe and post it here as soon as I find it!

Hey! I just stumbled upon this website while I was on Yahoo searching for Blue Moon Ice Cream. I am trying to find that ice cream because I used to love it so much. They sell Schoep's Ice Cream here in IL and I was wondering if anyone knew if they still made it because I have been unable to find it or if anyone knows of any other brand's of ice cream that can be found at a grocery store. Thank you.

I grew up in Michigan and always knew of blue moon ice cream, tho I don't know from where. We just bought some from Plainwell Ice Cream in Plainwell, MI -- very yummy. I can't compare it to anything since I don't remember having it before. It could be a new favorite flavor! BTW, the very best ice cream anywhere is Graeters Black raspberry chocolate chip in Columbus, OH (they have a couple of other locations in OH).

I'm originally from Michigan but am currently living in New York. Very recently I brought up blue moon ice cream in conversation -- and I also brought up the little-known fact that blue moon ice cream (the real kind [as prepared by Hudsonville Ice Cream and a handful of others]) is made to taste of toasted almonds. The fruity variety exists, yes, and several Superman varieties utilize it. I suppose since the toasted almond variety is what I grew up with (and it sounds like a lot of you did, too), I wouldn't condone anyone purchasing that fruity impostor. I'm still looking for a way to order from Hudsonville (based in Michigan). Good luck to everyone.

Blue moon ice cream is the best. I was just recently introduced to it and have a scoop after every meral. My college dining hall surves that and many other kinds of Shoep ice cream. I stubbled on to this site by trying to figure out what the actual flavor is. And i must say that teh Chocolate Shoppe ice cream is the BEST (being a native of Wisconsin myself i've tasted a lot of ice cream)!

I worked at an ice cream shop in southwest Michigan for four year in high school and did realize there was such a following for blue moon, or that it was a regional delicacy. But I myself am also a blue moon fan. Plainwell Ice Cream Company in Plainwell Michigan between Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo is still making it. It is a family run company and they make the ice cream on site. In terms of the flavoring it is a patented flavor they buy in a concentrate. It is technically a citrus blend, and other co-workers described it a tasting of white cake frosting but I myself always thought it just tasted "blue". I am sure you could order the concentrated syrup form an ice cream distributor but if you're passing through MI I would definitely stop. People would come from all around the state for their ice cream, literally and they have over 60 rotating favors, Blue Moon is always available. They sell it in up to three-gallon containers, but also in half gallons, which are in a deep freeze and would make it quite a ways. Their phone number is 269.685.8586* Note* They are open seasonally from the first weekend in March till Halloween, but they run a wholesale business in the winter and are available by phone. Happy licking.

Old fashioned SUPERMAN ICE CREAM can be found at Krogers in South Bend, Indiana.

You can also contact Inter-American Products at 1-800-697-2448 or go to their website, which I have posted as my URL.

I was reading the posts and just had to find out if we had some Superman at our local Krogers. It tastes just like I remember as child in Traverse City, Michigan; during the late 70's and early 80's.

Thanks for a trip down memory lane...
